Preparing for birth is an exciting journey filled with anticipation. One essential task is packing your birth bag, ensuring you're ready for any situation during labor and delivery. This guide will help you gather the necessary items for comfort, safety, and convenience. Let’s explore what you need to include in your hospital or birth center packing list.
What Are Some Hospital Bag Essentials?
Labor Essentials
Packing for labor involves ensuring you have items that support your comfort and relaxation. Consider including loose clothing, a birth ball, and essential oils for aromatherapy. Music and other natural labor relaxation tools can help create a soothing environment during labor.
Overnight Essentials
If you’ll be staying overnight, bring cozy pajamas, a robe, and slippers to feel at home. Pack toiletries like a toothbrush, toothpaste, and skincare items to help maintain your routine and boost your comfort.
Postpartum Essentials
Postpartum comfort is crucial for recovery. Include items like maternity pads, comfortable underwear, and a nursing bra. Consider packing a peri bottle and nipple cream for added convenience and relief.
Newborn Essentials
Welcome your newborn with essentials like baby clothes, a blanket, and diapers. Don’t forget a car seat for the journey home and any preferred baby toiletries!
What Should My Birthing Partner Pack?
Your birthing partner plays a crucial support role, so packing properly for them (or giving them a few weeks’ notice to pack their own bag ahead of time) is essential. Include snacks, water bottles, standard toiletries, and comfortable clothing. A camera and charger can help capture those first precious moments.
Packing for the Birth Center vs Hospital
While both require similar essentials, birth centers may focus more on creating a homelike atmosphere and might need additional comfort items. Hospitals might provide more on-site amenities, but they may be excessive to what you actually use.

FAQs
What is the best time to pack my birth bag?
Around 34-36 weeks of pregnancy is a good time to start. But, if you enter your “nesting” phase earlier, don’t hesitate to get it started!
How many outfits should I pack for my newborn?
Consider packing at least 2-3 outfits for your newborn. Don’t forget additional layers if your due date is during the colder months!
Can I bring my own pillow and blanket?
Yes, bringing personal comfort items can enhance your stay.
What snacks are recommended for labor?
Light, energy-boosting snacks like granola bars, electrolytes, and fruits are great choices.
Do I need to pack diapers?
Some hospitals provide them, but it's a good idea to pack a few. At Haven, we have some diapers available in our boutique, but recommend bringing your preferred brand!
Should I pack cloth diapers or disposable diapers?
This decision depends on personal preference and convenience. Cloth diapers are eco-friendly and cost-effective, while disposables are convenient and easy to use in a hospital setting.
Will I need to bring any specific paperwork?
Bring your ID, insurance information, and birth plan.
How can I ensure my comfort during labor?
Personalize your surroundings with items like music, photos, or aromatherapy.
